Who’s Who

Who’s who – our church officers

Revd Alistair Cook

Revd. Alistair Cook was appointed as Interim Moderator of Hobkirk & Southdean linked with Ruberslaw by the Presbytery of Jedburgh upon the retiral of Rev Douglas Nicol on 1st April 2018.

Some initial work relating to the vacancy was done before Revd Nicol retired but the role now steps up a gear and includes the following:  to be responsible for the charge as the minister would; to act as Moderator of the Kirk Sessions; to oversee the work of the locum to be appointed who will take services and undertake pastoral work; with the locum to look after the primary school and care home chaplaincies and conduct weddings and funerals; to arrange cover for the Sunday services when necessary; to guide the Kirk Sessions and congregations in relation to the vacancy; and. very importantly, to guide the Nominating Committee which will be formed in due course in their task of seeking a new minister who will be the right person for this extensive rural charge.

Alistair has been minister of Hawick: St Mary’s & Old Parish with Hawick: Teviot & Roberton since 4th February 2017.   For just over 8 years before that he served as minister of Lylesland Parish Church in Paisley.   Amongst all the many different aspects that ministry entails, he seeks to maintain the focus on being a preacher and pastor, and his desire is to see the church grow and deepen spiritually.   Before starting training for the ministry in 2004, he was a Chartered Accountant in professional practice for 19 years.    He specialised in tax as well as being involved in general practice including auditing.  He is married to Sheila and they have an energetic lurcher called Zak.   They are enjoying the different life and friendly people here in the beautiful Borders.   He enjoys music including playing the piano and singing and he also plays golf when he can – he enjoys it and says he is improving!

The Kirk Sessions of Hobkirk & Southdean and Ruberslaw

The aim of both Kirk Sessions is to provide services with a broad range of appeal and to keep the Kirk at the centre of social life in the parish, and you are very warmly invited to attend any of our services or functions. Supporters – no matter how irregular their attendance – should ask for their names to be added to the membership role, which gives the right to vote at congregational meetings and ensures visits and pastoral support from the area Elder.  Anyone confirmed in another church can become a member by resolution of the Session, as may “lapsed” members of the Church of Scotland whose lines lie with another kirk. Enquirers’ get-togethers are arranged from time to time by the minister for those wishing to learn more about the teaching of the church and it’s relevance to the modern world.  We hope to see you soon!
